What Is the ADDIE Training Model? Template + Examples

addie model of instructional design

Many organizations already implement aspects of the ADDIE model without it becoming a formalized design structure. However, due to the fast-paced nature of business, it is common for teams to focus on the design, development, and implementation stages. The ADDIE model provides a scaffold for your thinking and for collaboration with the rest of your learning design team. Use it to ensure you don’t overlook any steps and manage the project effectively. In summary, ADDIE is a process that can be implemented to allow for better course design.

Step 3. Development

addie model of instructional design

Today, the influence of the ADDIE method can be seen on most ID models being used. This could be as simple as looking at similar courses already in your LMS, gathering usage data, or talking to managers in operations to find out what their needs are. Even spending a short period of time conducting a needs analysis will pay dividends in the end. Having these conversations can be challenging, and I suggest easing into them, asking clarifying questions about the goal of the training, and providing solutions for how to achieve the goal. Regular check-in meetings also help ease the conversation and provide a set time for checking-in on the priority and status of this initiative. If you review your existing course design processes, you may find that you are using a less structured version of ADDIE already.

Traditional ADDIE Implementation Process

The Development stage starts the production and testing of the methodology being used in the project. In this stage, designers make use of the data collected from the two previous stages, and use this information to create a program that will relay what needs to be taught to participants. If the two previous stages required planning and brainstorming, the Development stage is all about putting it into action. This phase includes three tasks, namely drafting, production and evaluation. During the development phase, the designers will develop and assemble the designed content assets (Morrison, Ross, & Kemp, 2007), while system analysts will collaborate and integrate different modes of technology.

Technology & Tools

A core strength of the ADDIE model lies in its emphasis on iteration. Throughout each stage of development, the model encourages ongoing feedback and adjustments, fostering continuous improvement. This iterative approach ensures prompt incorporation of necessary modifications, leading to the refinement of instructional content throughout the entire design process.

How To Create An Online Course Following The ADDIE Model

By observing, you can take notes on how well objectives are met, how closely the course sticks to the predicted timeline, and what learners get out of it. If you use an online course development tool or a Learning Management System (LMS), then your course is already where it needs to be. Just hit publish, invite learners via email, and track learner progress and results. A good LMS streamlines much of the work necessary to deliver your content, and track learner progress and results. During the implementation phase, the sales training program is rolled out to the sales team. Workshops are conducted, and eLearning modules are made accessible through the company’s learning management system.

Development phase

Specific means the team must execute each element of the instructional design plan with attention to detail. The design phase may involve writing a design document/design proposal or concept and structure note to aid final development. Integrating AI tools into the Analysis phase allows instructional designers to use available data better, leading to more targeted and practical learning experiences. In addition, this improved understanding of learners’ needs and goals sets the stage for a more personalized and adaptive instructional design process.

This structured nature enhances the overall quality and effectiveness of the learning program. The planning phase emphasizes the importance of strategic planning before diving into the detailed analysis and design stages. This phase involves setting the overall goals, defining the scope of the project, and establishing the resources, timeline, and stakeholders’ roles. In this phase you bring your storyboards to life and start creating the courses.

The ADDIE Model Analysis Phase

Based on that feedback, you can evaluate whether or not you achieved the goals you identified in the ANALYSIS phase, and, based on the answer, either forge ahead, make a few tweaks, or begin the ADDIE process anew. The answer to this question will help you determine the best delivery tool. Find out whether your learners prefer face-to-face learning, hands-on skill-building, or a mixture of both, which would point you to a blended learning approach. When planning an eLearning course or curriculum, it’s easy to get bogged down in the details.

This process should be repeated at least every two months, or whenever you notice changes need to be made to course content (if industry best practices or school curriculum requirements shift, for example). Plus, ADDIE is an iterative model which allows for feedback, evaluation, and changes at every stage to ensure learning objectives are met. While evaluation is the next and last stage of the ADDIE model, you can already start gathering your data in the implementation phase of the instructional design process.

It encompasses five phases—Analyze, Design, Develop, Implement, and Evaluate—to ensure that educational content is aligned with learner needs and achieves desired learning outcomes. Integrating AI tools such as ChatGPT and Claude into the ADDIE model can revolutionize instructional design, creating more dynamic, personalized, and compelling learning experiences. By leveraging AI in each model phase, instructional designers can enhance their analysis, design, development, implementation, and evaluation processes, improving learners’ learning outcomes. In the development phase, the instructional designers and subject matter experts collaborate to create the training materials. This includes developing presentations, eLearning modules, role-playing scenarios, and assessment quizzes. The content is aligned with the learning objectives and designed to engage learners effectively.

As we’ve argued throughout this article, high-level models like ADDIE continue to be useful in 2024. Through systematic evaluation at each stage, the model enables the identification of strengths and weaknesses in learning materials. This ongoing assessment contributes to content refinement, ensuring the final product meets desired learning objectives and maintains high standards. It is important that designers be systematic when transmitting designs to actual content, graphics and materials. In this phase, you will also create a prototype for the training program.

ADDIE Model Training for Instructional Design

These benefits collectively contribute to a dynamic and adaptive learning system that fosters organizational growth and success. The ADDIE model stands out for its adaptability, effortlessly tailoring itself to diverse learning needs. The evaluation phase in the ADDIE model is the final step, serving as a crucial feedback loop for training improvement. Once again, the implementation phase is a chance to evaluate how well materials work for teaching the objectives laid out, before the final and official evaluation phase that occurs next. The first and arguably most important phase in the ADDIE model is the analysis phase. The ADDIE model analysis phase is where you will gather all of the information you have at the outset of the project to define your approach.

The Develop Phase

System testers will perform various procedures to identify errors and improve processes. The collected feedback can be used to review and revise the project according to requirements (Davis, 2013). After completing the development of the course material, the designers should conduct an imperative pilot test; this can be carried out by involving key stakeholders and rehearsing the course material. The feedback obtained from the pilot would also be beneficial to identify the weaknesses and further enhance the whole process before implementation (Davis, 2013).

What is ADDIE Training Model?

Although these doubtless transmit some information, they are unlikely to be as effective as instructional design training materials are. Much of the information you’ll use in the ADDIE model evaluation phase comes from the assessments that instructors delivered to students at the end of their course of training. If you followed the ADDIE model precisely, then you outlined specific instructional and learning objectives in the beginning stages of development. You should now be able to see how well learners met the objectives after receiving the instruction contained in the course materials. The implementation phase entails the transformation of the plan into action. The steps of the implementation phase include training the educators, arranging the learners, and organizing the environment for learning suitability (Morrison, Ross, & Kemp, 2007).

Examples of ADDIE model in training plans

addie model of instructional design

In this article, we dive into the intricacies of the ADDIE model, exploring each phase’s significance, and how they collectively contribute to the development of engaging, results-oriented learning initiatives. Good project managers can adapt on the go to ensure they deliver the best possible product to the course participants. This could mean tweaking content for a change in audience persona or the minutiae of having everything ready to go on the day. While the previous two steps involve examination, planning, and generating ideas, development is when these ideas are first put into action. This is the last step where significant changes to the program as a whole can be made, so it is imperative that stakeholders are happy with the chosen goals and processes needed to achieve them. Organizations should create a high-level outline of the entire program to structure the learning interventions and specify objectives for each aspect participants receive.

addie model of instructional design

Design phase

In the ADDIE model, each stage must be carried out in order and carefully considered before moving on. Instructional theories also play an important role in the design of instructional materials. Theories such as behaviorism, constructivism, social learning and cognitivism help shape and define the outcome of instructional materials. Before we finish, this section will reflect on some of the alternative planning options. If ADDIE does not seem to fit you perfectly, see whether these other options can help. Once your course is live, you never stop Analyzing, Designing, Developing, Implementing, and Evaluating it.

Now the ADDIE training method is widely used to provide a skeleton for all types of instructional design materials creation, and the ADDIE training model is used around the world in teaching instructional design. During the design phase, the training team defines the learning objectives for each user group. They outline the training approach, such as online tutorials for self-paced learning and instructor-led sessions for more complex features. They also decide on the training materials, including user manuals and interactive simulations. There are several different means of performing a summative evaluation. It can be helpful to consider another training evaluation model (such as the Kirkpatrick model) when developing a framework for your evaluation.

The ADDIE Model represents an iterative, dynamic, and flexible guideline for instructional designers to build effective eLearning courses. The model gives you a streamlined, focused approach that provides feedback for continuous improvement. The ADDIE Model is an instructional design model that provides a structured and adaptable approach to creating effective learning instructional content, courses, and experiences. The ADDIE Model serves as a guiding framework for instructional designers, educators, and trainers alike for creating training materials. The design phase deals with learning objectives, assessment instruments, exercises, content, subject matter analysis, lesson planning and media selection. Systematic means a logical, orderly method of identifying, developing and evaluating a set of planned strategies targeted for attaining the project’s goals.

Traditional ADDIE Design Process

But at an organizational level, training now has a very close link to core business outcomes. If your objectives were not clear enough from the beginning, you may find you’re having a hard time finding where improvement is needed at the end. In this case, return to the analysis phase and try to be more precise.

What Is The Ideal Online Course Length?

I find it especially important to use Kolb’s learning cycle when training on communication skills, emotional intelligence, or other topics such as facilitators training, or sustainability. It may not be the model you go to for more technical topics where sharing data and information is the core of your training. This is a template that summarizes how to use Kolb’s learning cycle in the classroom. When designing training sessions, I most often turn directly to this tried-and-true 4-step cycle for experiential learning. This is because I work at the intersection of facilitation and training, where all learning is hands-on and participatory.

Testing your course is the most important part of the development phase. After all, if your training scenarios aren't accurate, they won't hold any value. Peer review also helps ensure every possible interaction takes the learner to the right place. As the name implies, the development stage is when you put your design into action. As you do, you may find that your design needs modification to be effective. And the best way to do that is by building out your design and doing user testing.

AI-driven assessment development and adaptation help designers create tools that accurately measure learner progress and adapt to individual needs. During this phase, instructional designers outline the structure and organization of the training program, develop specific learning objectives, and choose appropriate instructional strategies. The evaluation phase measures the effectiveness and efficiency of the training course.

They also gather feedback through surveys to understand users’ experiences and identify areas for improvement in future software rollouts. One limitation of the ADDIE model is its potential challenge in fast-paced environments. The methodical nature of the model, with its distinct phases and emphasis on thorough analysis and planning, may not align well with situations requiring rapid development and deployment of learning solutions. This collaborative approach fosters cross-functional communication, shared insights, and a holistic understanding of the learning objectives. By involving diverse perspectives, the ADDIE model enhances the overall quality of the learning program and aligns it with the broader organizational goals.

This is where all the information gathered during the analysis step is dissected to make informed decisions about the design of the development program. Learning and development courses must have a clear goal matching the audience’s skills and intelligence to succeed. When designing a new training program, it can be easy to get lost in the details. The development isn’t over yet; you’re paying attention to learner feedback so you can make the course even better. Instead of creating the entire course then dumping it all at once on your reviewers, it’s a good idea to divide the course into modules to save development time. This way, while the customer and/or QA is reviewing a module, the development team can continue working on the next one.

A simple way of identifying areas of improvement is gap analysis – comparing the desired situation to your current situation. ADDIE has evolved over the years, with revisions to the five stages, making the model more dynamic and interactive. However, a version of ADDIE similar to what we know today has been in use since the middle of the 1980s. The ADDIE model provides a sequential list of requirements with known inputs and outputs such that staff developing the course can maintain a big-picture view of what they are trying to achieve. Sign up to get the latest industry tips, insights, and trends from our team of learning experts. Rapid prototyping, with its focus on speed and less attention to completion and polish, might work well for you if you are short on time and plan future re-runs of the same course.

The five phases—Analysis, Design, Development, Implementation, and Evaluation—represent a dynamic, flexible guideline for building effective training and performance support tools. While perhaps the most common design model, there are a number of weaknesses to the ADDIE model which have led to a number of spin-offs or variations. The ADDIE model is a systematic instructional design framework used to guide the process of creating educational and training programs. ADDIE implementation is the phase in which learners actually receive the instruction and materials prepared for them throughout the previous three steps of the ADDIE model. As such, it is arguably the most important step because it is where the learning actually occurs. The design phase of ADDIE is where you will take all the information you accumulated above and start using it to define an approach to teaching the desired materials to learners.

But the city also has many cultural attractions that attract millions of visitors annually. Whether you’re a first-time explorer or an expert at outdoor activities, you can explore the local gems that make up this diverse metropolis. Keep in mind, here we have a film by Ruggero Deodato that stars David A. Hess. Yes, the Gore Score is going to inevitably going to be high. There is not too much graphic violence, such as heads flying or anything of the matter.

The insider's guide to Melrose Avenue

He also discusses the other actors, the sexuality of the two criminals, and his own experiences with drug use. (He still insists here that his sex scene with Annie Belle was unsimulated, even though it clearly wasn’t.) He admits that he doesn’t hold anything back as an actor, and brings a lot of who he really is into his roles—take that as you will. House Sweet House is an interview with set designer Antonello Geleng, who gives his thoughts about the film after rewatching it for the first time in 40 years—he’s not entirely comfortable with it. He also talks about the compromises he had to make due to budgetary constraints.

A guide to the Downtown Arts District

The Special Features on the version that I own are interviews with those involved in the making of the film and an original theatrical trailer. After weathering the storm of controversy that followed the release of Cannibal Holocaust in 1980, director Ruggero Deodato followed it up quickly with House on the Edge of the Park (aka La casa sperduta nel parco) that same year. While the film reduced the level of graphic gore compared to its predecessor, it increased the levels of sexualized violence on display, generating plenty of controversy of its own. While it may have long been a center of the film industry and a cultural hub for the arts, it is also the second-largest city in the United States and the most populous metropolitan area in California. It’s not only home to Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica, but it also has some of the most iconic tourist attractions in the world.

The Man Who Loved Women is a new interview with Deodato, who explains how the production came together, and gives his own thoughts about the film. He initially almost hated it, and thought it was more shocking than Cannibal Holocaust, but started to love it once he saw all of the fan support. He also discusses the cast, the cinematography, the score, and the editing. Lights On is a new interview with Sergio D’Offizi, who talks about the locations, his use of lighting, his crew, and his respect for Deodato. Prairie Dog is an interview with the always voluble Giovanni Lombardo Radice, who relates how he got into acting, how he was hired for the film, and his stories from the shoot.

It’s easy to see why some of them were eliminated, as there really isn’t a natural place for them in the finished film, but others should probably have been left in—especially since Deodato Holocaust only runs a brief 71 minutes. Note that they aren’t encoded individually, and must be played as a group, but there is the option to chapter skip through them. It’s more like time to bail when two psychotics gate-crash a perfectly delightful get-together and turn it into a gore-fest with a huge body count. Directed by Ruggero Deodato, House on the Edge of the Park makes no pretense — it’s an exploitation flick complete with ritualistic torture. 59th St. and East Drive to practice his cello on the weekends.

(He supposedly made up with them later.) It’s all fascinating stuff, though the drawback is that Guerra decided to put everything together in a pseudo found footage style, with frequent overlayed video glitches, and that gets tiresome in a big hurry. The commentary track features Bruce Holecheck from the Cinema Arcana website, and Art Ettinger from Ultra Violent magazine. The pair are clearly big fans of the film, even though they do admit that it’s pretty sick. They prepared well, and read a lot of material that they wrote out in advance, so there’s a lot more quality information here than if they had just winged the entire thing.

Sometimes, it’s hard to tell if Ricky enjoys what Alex is doing, or is just going along for the ride with no choice in the matter. Mr. Hess is not really such a bad guy in all actuality. Anyways, enough about his good side, lets get back to the ruthless bastard that we all know and love to hate, the name of evil incarnate is Alex. When two low-lives gate crash a party, and are mocked by the posh hosts, they decide to get their revenge by subjecting the guests to various forms of torture and violence. Sometime later, Alex and his friend Ricky are closing up the underground garage where they both work, planning to go to a local disco. Before they can leave, a Cadillac pulls in with a young, well-dressed couple, Tom and his girlfriend Lisa, asking for help with their car.

They give background on how legal issues with Cannibal Holocaust caused the producers to want to make another film quickly and cheaply, with limited cast and locations, in order to recoup some money. Despite the establishing shots at the beginning, the film wasn’t shot in America, so Holecheck and Ettinger note resulting errors like the bidet in the bathroom. They provide biographies for Deodato, Ortolani, and all of the actors, with a natural emphasis on David Hess.

Ricky then returns to the house with Gloria just as Alex forces Cindy to strip off the rest of her clothes and repeatedly slash her with his razor. At this point, Ricky changes his mind and attempts to stop Alex. Upset at being betrayed by his friend, Alex turns against Ricky, slashes his abdomen wide open, and then breaks down in regret.

house at the edge of the park

Alex refuses to help them, saying that the garage is closed, but the slow-witted Ricky decides to help and easily fixes the problem. Tom tells Alex and Ricky that they are driving to a friend's house in New Jersey for a party and invites them along. Before leaving, Alex stops by his locker, filled with various weapons he uses to murder people, and takes a straight-edged razor. Los Angeles is home to some of the greatest museums and cultural institutions in the country. But its diversity is reflected in the city’s neighborhoods, which contain everything from affluent areas to low-income communities. The diversity of Los Angeles neighborhoods is a wonderful reflection of the city’s character and history.

The violence (although extreme) stays subtle and adds to the realism… Which I loved. There is slicing of the flesh with Alex’s straight razor and there is a little bit of sexual assault and forced sexual assault (not counting the opening rape scene, which is the reason for the party in the first place… Figure that one out on your own). Of course, you can’t go wrong with a sadistic bastard played by David Hess, so you know that part is taken care of. The score is Italian disco-ish dance music with a soothing voice throughout the feature.

Cruise lines cannot guarantee late embarkation on the cruise at all ports of call. Whether late embarkation will be permitted is dependent on the country of the port of call and applicable embarkation rules. It is at the cruise lines’ sole discretion if a delayed passenger will be allowed to board the cruise after initial departure. Discover the beauty of the Galapagos Islands on one of our all-inclusive cruises to this ecological paradise. Our Galapagos cruises include vacation options that combine a stunning cruise with a few nights in Quito, Ecuador or the ruins of Machu Picchu.

When it comes to planning the ultimate getaway, there are so many reasons why cruise vacations rank among the most popular travel options. If you’re not a planner, or if the only things you’re looking to focus on during your getaway is savoring great food, relaxing, and soaking up the sights, cruise vacations are the way to go. A cruise vacation is also a great option if you’re traveling with the whole family, especially when you opt for a Royal Caribbean cruise. All of the ships in this cruise line’s fleet offer family-friendly experiences for guests of all ages. Even little ones will find plenty of ways to play with spaces and activities designed for tots to tweens. One of the top reasons savvy travelers love cruising, though, is because of the incredible value it offers.

Second Guest sharing a stateroom receives up to 75% Off Fare Savings Offer (the “Offer”) on selected cruises. They're all here to support you through every step of your journey, from flight to ship. Getting flight quotes or booking flights is easy, but if you need help contact us or your Travel Advisor. Many cruise lines offer the practical combination offer, but you will often find it at Oceania Cruises,Regent Seven Seas Cruises and Hapag-Lloyd Cruises. Of course, this also depends on the distance of your desired destination, since not every cruise route is suitable for a combination offer with flight.

If you’re booking a cruise vacation, you’ll find there are benefits to both strategies. Planning ahead is a great way to score big savings, as Royal Caribbean often runs early saver deals to guests booking well in advance. It’s also pretty safe to assume prices usually go up as availability goes down the closer you get to your sail date, so booking ahead is a surefire way to lock in a great rate. That said, booking a cruise at the last minute can also yield some unexpected savings — but only if the itinerary you’re interested in hasn’t sold out yet.

So, for example, two passengers using a new TenPass with a round-trip reservation would have four trips deducted from the pass's initial ten trips, leaving six trips to use later. If you're a frequent Fast Ferry traveler, then a Bay State Cruise Company TenPass can save you a lot of money. It allows you to buy ten trips ahead of time, at a significant discount from regular adult fares. The service is seasonal starting up in mid-May Thursday-Sunday only, expanding to a full daily schedule around the first week of June, and continuing through the peak season until the middle of October.

(WPRI) — Sarah Martin was prepared to make French toast for her two children Tuesday morning while hearing about the cruise they went on with their grandparents. They do offer a nice narrated tour of historic Plymouth Harbor as the trip gets under way, though. The Fast Ferry Salacia is one of the largest and fastest catamarans in the country, and can carry up to 600 passengers, but no cars (though you can take a bike aboard for an additional $6 each way).

Celebrating our 51st year of sailing to Provincetown

Apart from the dramatic differences in fashion, this photo depicts a nearly identical scene as the ones from earlier in this album, from the 1920s and 30s. In all of the 180 years of there being a ferry running between Boston and Provincetown, NO steamship company, before us, has been fortunate enough to have provided service longer than 26 years. Economic twists and turns and over-competition made service between Boston and Provincetown a revolving door of steamship operators since 1842.

The two met and danced together the entire trip-long. These vessels were, in large part, floating dance halls. Reservations are not required but we strongly recommend them, particularly during the peak tourist season. You might also want to consider purchasing tickets for both the outward and the return leg of your journey right from the outset. That, of course, is assuming you know exactly when you'll be returning, which isn't always the case.

Roundtrip returns may be on a later day, but must be this season. Our Provincetown Fast Ferry fleet has the most daily departures, are the most modern vessels,  and our Boston dock is easy to get to in the Seaport District. Once purchased, TenPasses have no expiration date, and may be used with any ferry reservation involving two or fewer passengers. Each of a TenPass's ten trips covers one ferry ride for one passenger.

Embassy in Mexico, which told her the only way her kids could return was either on the cruise or with emergency passports. Martin told 12 News their grandmother suffered a heart attack while on the cruise. She said the ship was supposed to return to Miami, Florida, but instead brought them to Mexico. Bay State Cruise Company is performing a site update. We will be live again shortly. However, our ticketing page is live while we update the home page, see below to purchase tickets.

All ferries begin the day in Boston so these are not a good option for travelling to Boston from P-Town if you need to be in the city early. If you're already in staying in P-Town and want to get into Boston, the earliest you'll be able to get there is lunchtime (although the return ticket could certainly be used the next day). Tickets for cruises must be picked up on the evening of the cruise from our ticket office.

With an eye toward economy of construction, ships began being built with less and less compound curvature. The companies pictured above were also the last to call on Provincetown prior to bludgeoning one another into insolvency and ending ferry service from Boston altogether in 1965. This lapse in service remained in effect until Bay State Cruise Company started its service in 1973. Tickets that are purchased in advance and then unused will not be refunded, just exchanged for other tickets, subject to availability. And while you can certainly book tickets online or by telephone, you can only exchange those tickets if you show up in person at either the Boston Harbor Cruise ticket office or The Whale Watch Store in Provincetown. Silver Line – Take the subway to South Station and transfer to the Silver Line (the Silver Line also travels through the Back Bay).

In 1973, Bay State Cruise Company steps in to put an end to the only eight year period, in over 100, that there had been no ferry service of any kind between Boston and Provincetown. The first Bay State Cruises vessel with the name PROVINCETOWN ran from 1973 to 1980. From 1937 to roughly 1945, Bay State Steamship Company operated the SS GOVERNOR COBB between Boston and Provincetown. This is the vessel that our very own Provincetown Ticket Office Manager, Erin Thomas Lawrence, tells us that her grandmother and grandfather met and fell in love aboard.

We are extraordinarily grateful to have found a way to make it to our 51st year of providing service to the great community of Provincetown.Thank you for helping make it possible to get to this milestone. We've assembled this special section of our website to help commemorate our 50th year, last year. Sailing between Boston and Provincetown is a great American tradition. In sailing with us, you are participating in a storied New England summer activity even older than that of baseball. We look forward to the chance of including you in the great pastime.

This photo shows the "Boston Boat" (as the ferry has long been named by Provincetowners) landing at Railroad Wharf. Later reconstructed and renamed MacMIllan Pier, the Boston Boats have been landing at nearly the identical location for 170 years. In 1883, the first vessel built specifically for the Boston-Provincetown route was introduced. The LONGFELLOW, pictured here in 1890, operated until 1902. In the background is Provincetown and two of the hundreds of fishing schooners that called on Provincetown regularly during its heyday as a fishing port. The obvious drawback to all of these services is their inability to transport cars.

If you're staying in Boston and checking out other attractions there in addition to your trip to P-Town, you should definitely check out a Go Boston Card. The Bay State Cruise Company is the onlt Boston to Provincetown ferry operator that participates in this program and offers free passage on their traditional ferry or an upgrade to the fast ferry. Check out our Boston travel deals page, which explains exactly how the card works and how much you might be able to save. This postcard, post marked 1952, shows the dramatic change that took place in vessel design as steamer made way for new diesel powered motor vessels.

The DOROTHY BRADFORD was operated by the Cape Cod Steamship Company from 1911 to 1937. After Bay State Cruises, the Cape Cod SSCo was the longest operating steamship company between Boston and Provincetown. This picture, and the one immediately following, are fascinating for how they show the dramatic change in fashion that took place in the 26 years separating the photos. This, the first image, taken in 1911, shows ladies with hats, parasols, and long dresses. By the time the following photograph was taken, in 1937, women are wearing sleeveless dresses, men are in shirt sleeves, completely gone are the parasols and half the group is without hats. The Bay State Cruise Company's Boston Provincetown ferry service leaves from Long Wharf in Boston, just a short walk from Faneuil Hall and the Silver Line, and takes you to MacMillan Wharf in Provincetown.

Operators of the Provincetown Ferry between Boston and Provincetown for over 50 years. This photo is taken from the breezeway just aft of the staterooms on our first ferry, M/V PROVINCETOWN. It's a marvelous depiction of Ptown in the 70s, not just for the hairstyles of our passengers, but, for the fishing activity and shoreline of Provincetown. The inbound fishing vessel is none other than the F/V Michael Anne, one of the last Eastern Rig Draggers to call on Provincetown. Long Point Lighthouse is seen with the no longer existent overhead power lines. The sailboat on the shoreline is the venerable AMF Sunfish, the everyman boat of the 70s before Lasers and kayaks became all the rage.

There are three ways to get to Provincetown by ferry. The Bay State Cruise Company and Boston Harbor Cruises both offer services that depart from Boston, while a third operation, Capt. John Boats runs a limited service out of Plymouth. Driving from the West – Take the Mass Pike, I-90, East.

Is there any automobile ferry service to Provincetown?

Boston Harbor's largest cruise ship with room for groups of 100 to 1100 passengers. Further underscoring our commitment to this historic ferry route, Bay State launches the even faster/stronger/better PROVINCETOWN IV in July 2013. With the most sophisticated engines and ride control available, the PIV is the greenest ferry on Massachusetts Bay, and among the most comfortable. A photo from 1980, the first year we operated the MV PROVINCETOWN II between Boston and Ptown. MacMillan Pier still had the fish processing structures at the end and the Wydah Museum was still a coffee shop and bait shop.

Martin said her kids are with their grandfather right now, who is caring for them while also trying to support his wife. She doesn’t blame the cruise line for dropping the family off together in Mexico, but does blame the government for making it unnecessarily difficult for them to get back home. Now, Martin said their grandmother is in a medically-induced coma and her kids, ages 6 and 8, are stuck in Mexico with no way to get back home.

Boston Harbor City Cruises: Discount Offers

The Silver Line departures are less than every five minutes to the World Trade Center stop, the location of our dock. The trip from South Station to World Trade Center takes only four minutes. Our ships depart from the EAST side of the World Trade Center (the right side of the World Trade Center as you face the harbor). Bay State Cruise's third ferry dedicated to Provincetown, was the very first fast ferry to ply the route. We ran only two trips per day back then and the price was $75 round trip. Despite a gallon of diesel only costing $.80 per gallon back then, we lost our shirts in these early years of fast ferry transport.

The high-speed catamaran is the largest and fastest passenger catamaran of her kind in the country, and can travel at speeds up to 45 miles per hour, which is faster than most speedboats. Once in the tunnel, follow the signs to the South Boston exit. At the end of the South Boston exit ramp, head straight one block to Seaport Boulevard. On Friday and Saturday nights throughout the summer, join us on Boston Harbor to dance and party the night away with Boston's most entertaining live acts, DJs, and comedy. The Provincetown IV is the newest fast ferry serving Cape Cod.

In Truth, Provincetown is a place where you can easily enjoy a vacation without a car, so the Boston to Provincetown ferry really is something you should consider. Our Ticket Office is located in the Chamber of Commerce office on the west side of Lopes Square, just across the parking lot from MacMillan Pier and Fishermen’s Wharf. Our entertainment cruises are limited to Adults 21 or more years of age. All entertainment cruises begin and end at our Boston Docks. Our ferry PROVINCETOWN carried its share of Rayon shirts into Ptown in the 70s as well...

The Provincetown Business Guild is working directly with Bay State Cruise Lines & Boston Harbor City Cruises to make discount tickets available for Pride and other events throughout the month of June in Provincetown. The Silver Line stop is less than 100 yards from our pier. To get to us from the station, please take the New Congress Street street-level exit. Proceed to the crosswalk to the right of the station’s exit doors. Take a left across the crosswalk, one short block to our pier at the World Trade Center (the Seaport Hotel blocks one’s view of our vessels, just across the street from the Silver Line Station).

This will take you through a new tunnel to the South Boston waterfront, where we are located. Once you are at the corner of Seaport Blvd, you will be looking at the West side of the World Trade Center. Our ships are tied up to the EAST side of that same building (the right side of the World Trade Center as you face the harbor). Driving from the North – Take I-93 (central artery) South to exit 16B, the Purchase Street and South Station exit.
